Tragedy at Maha Kumbh 2025: A Stampede at the Sacred Sangam
A tragic stampede unfolded at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on January 29, 2025, leaving several casualties and numerous injuries. The religious gathering, known as the world’s largest, saw an overwhelming number of pilgrims on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a day considered highly auspicious for taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam.
Officials are yet to release an exact death toll, but reports indicate that multiple devotees have been hospitalized following the disaster.
What Led to the Stampede?
As per the Press Trust of India (PTI), a “stampede-like” situation broke out at the Sangam due to an unexpected surge of pilgrims.
“Some people have been injured and taken to hospitals after a barrier broke at the Sangam. We are yet to determine the exact number of injured individuals,” said Akanksha Rana, Officer on Special Duty for the Mela.
The number of pilgrims on Mauni Amavasya is estimated to reach 100 million (10 crores) in just one day. The Uttar Pradesh state government had earlier reported that over 150 million devotees had already participated in the holy dip since the beginning of the Maha Kumbh.
Eyewitness Accounts: “There Was No Chance for Escape”
Sarojini, a pilgrim from Karnataka, recounted the terrifying moments of the stampede:
“We were part of a group of 60 people. Suddenly, the crowd started pushing. We got trapped, people were falling, and the situation became uncontrollable. There was no chance for escape.”
Many pilgrims, like Sarojini, found themselves caught in the chaos as thousands surged towards the riverbanks, seeking to complete their sacred ritual.
Security Measures and Response
Authorities had deployed additional security forces for crowd control, but the sheer number of devotees overwhelmed the system. Emergency teams are currently conducting rescue operations, and local hospitals have been put on high alert.
